Dark Mark Illusion Scarf Pattern

Finished Size: 6 inches x 71 inches (without fringe)
Materials:
Yarn: Cascade 220 (100% wool, 220yds)
- Black #8555, 1 skein
- Green #2409, 1 skein (this is the correct color--#7814, which I listed before, was a guess and is a slightly lighter green that would look very nice for this project)
*It's important to use a yarn that you can block, because illusion knitting tends to curl.* 100% acrylic yarns don't work well for this project.
Needles: US #7 (4.5mm)
Notions: tapestry needle, pins for blocking
Gauge: Getting the exact gauge I got for this project isn't especially important--you mainly want your gauge to be a little tighter than normal. Many websites say to go down one needle size from what you would normally use with a particular yarn.
Background Section:
Row 1: K across in green
Row 2: P across in green
Row 3: K across in black
Row 4: K across in black
Note: Instead of breaking the yarn at the end of every color repeat, carry the yarn you're not using loosely up one side of the scarf (trust me, you won't be able to see it)
Directions:
CO 31st in black. K 2 rows in black.
Knit background section 3 times, ending with row 4.
Blast!: Ok, I just noticed that the way I wrote the charts can be confusing. Please make note that you *knit all right side rows.* I wrote that kind of small. In other words, the blank spaces are knits on the right side and purls on the wrong side. The dots are purls on the right side and knits on the wrong side (but since there aren't any dots on the right side rows, you end up only knitting the dots). I hope this helps!
Also, the white blocks in the chart are where you use the black yarn, and the green blocks are where you use the green yarn.
Knit Chart 1. Then knit Chart 2.
Repeat background section until scarf reaches approximately 50 inches from CO edge, ending with row 4.
Knit Chart 3. Then knit Chart 4.
NOTE: On chart 4, rows 149 and 150 are switched. Oops!
Knit background section 3 times, ending with row 4.
Knit 1 row in black. BO in black. Fringe as desired.

Blocking: Pin the dry scarf to blocking surface, then spray with water until thoroughly wet (make sure you get the edges). Allow to dry completely before removing pins.
(This is the best way I found to block illusion knitting--I was afraid that soaking the scarf before pinning it might stretch it out and cause the ridges to stretch out)

That scarf is too freaking cool for words. I may even have to make it, regrdless of th fact that wearing something ith a snake depiction around my neck is heinously ironic given my freakish irrational fears. Oh well. Also, I was highly amused by the activities with the swift.
Your scarf is really amazing. We'd love to post your photos in The Leaky Cauldron's Craft Gallery. Your pattern would also be a coveted addition to the Crafts pages, in case you might be interested.
Gorgeous job!

And here I was going to tell you how totally SWEET that scarf was and wondering how to make one when I sign back on to see this post. =)
You did an awesome job!
i am so making this. thanks so much for providing a pattern.
You are that good!
Your scarf is just flabergasting! I love it! When I am done with my current project and the socks I am dying to make, I am going to have to make this for my little brother! I just have to say WOW!
Very awesome!
Nicely done.
:)
That is totally and completely rad.
I love this scarf and may make one for my brother...I also tagged you on my blog for the Seven Random Facts Meme, sorry. Blame Robin at the fitted knits KAL.
Your scarf is incredible! Amazing work. I don't know if I can bring myself to wear something with the Dark Mark, but it is cool!
OMG this scarf is so freaking cool!! Yeay Finally a HP scarf I won't want to stab myself in the eye with bordem knitting! Plus it just kicks ass. :D
That has seriously got to be one of the best things i have seen in a long while. Very, very cool!
I so need some black yarn now!
wow great scarf. I made my friend a dark mark messenger bag (felted) using your chart. It was a huge success so she will definitely be getting the illusion scarf for her birthday this year. Thanks for posting the pattern.
Good Lord Voldy!!! That scarf is one of the best HP related knits I have ever seen - and I'm not even a Slytherin/Draco/Snape fan... don't hate me coz I'm different ;-)
That is absolutely fantastic - I need to find a Death Eater to make one for!
You should be very proud.
VERY VERY cool...
my husband has now requested one..
thanks for the pattern!!
That scarf rocks!
It's bloody brilliant!!! Thank you SO much for sharing the pattern! I'm currently knitting a PoA scarf for my girl, then will start Mrs. Weasley's house coat for myself, then start your Dark Mark scarf for my niece. She's going to love it to pieces!!
Can I please ask maybe a ridiculously simple question (but I have never done illusion knitting before so I am new,and I have never read a chart before)....
In reading the charts, there are green squares, and white squares.... In relation to this particular scarf, do the green squares mean the green wool, and the white squares mean the black wool ? Help ! Thanks.
Dang! That is different. I knitted myself a Gryffindor scraf. I love mine but bit width but it keeps me warm.
just wondering if you adapted the pattern for this scarf from the ilusion one in stich n' bitch. anyway it is amazing and i will defintaly have to make one
You are sooo brilliant and sooo generous for sharing this pattern! I'm more than half finished and will be done in time for the Premieres! Thank you!
I've just started working on the pattern and it's working up nicely. Thank you for the clear instructions! I'm thinking of attempting to embelish the skull and snake with some metallic green floss after I'm done, will send pictures if I do. Again, Awesome!
Thank you for this incredibly cool design ! I am currently knitting it for my daughter, and just finished the first 'symbol',starting on the dull piece. When it's finished (in a day or two I guess), I'll put a picture of it on my website, http://marleen.notlong.com, with a link to your amazing pattern ! (The site is currently only in Dutch, but I am working on a translation, but my English is not that great, so that might take a while.
Thank you for sharing this great design, so even we in Holland can knit this great scarf !
Thank you for the innovative idea. Some human error on my part has prevented the pattern-strict creation of this scarf, but I will still wear it with pride at one of the upcoming midnight book parties for Deathly Hallows. ^_^ Happy Knitting!
Amazing Scarf!! Thanks for posting the pattern! You've brought me out of a lack-of-inspiration-induced knitting dry spell. (Bad news for the family as I get cranky without my stress-relieving knitting!) ;)
I've always worn Gryffindor house colors proudly (love Prof. McGonagall!!) but this will make me 'go to the dark side' ...at least briefly!
Keep up the great work...you really have a great eye for design!!
That pattern is just so cool! Thanks for sharing. I am wondering whether I could adapt parts of it for the Hogwarts Sock Swap socks that I have to knit.
Craziness--I was looking up "dark mark" so I could design my own illusion scarf for my friend, and your scarf was on the first page of the image search! So thanks for saving me buttloads of time--and it is gorgeous, btw!
This is just too cool! I'm a novice knitter; so it will have to wait. However, I am sooooo saving this for future ref. Love it!
brilliant!
Thanks so much for your help with this. I finished it just in time for nephews birthday on Friday. I'll just have time to block it. Had NO yarn left, panicked a bit while knitting that I might run out. BUT make me knit faster. THANKS FROM JOEY :) and his Knitting Auntie
Thank you sooo much for sharing this pattern! I just finished one for a co-worker and have started another one for my daughter.
That is the smartest use of shadow knitting I have ever seen. Kudos.
This Scarf is EXCELLENT! I've never tried illusion knitting before, but you made it clear enough that I was able to knit this on the first try. I'm going to give the completed scarf to my little sister, who may well be deliriously happy. Thanks for putting such a cool project out there.
Your ideas are brilliant. My alternate identity is Charlie Weasley, but it is highly necessary I use your lovely charts. Thank you so much for these ideas: I'm combining your Dark Mark chart (which I'm adapting so it takes up about a quarter of the stitches) with the illusion knitting and making... armwarmers! I will throw lots of credit your way for the magnificent idea and send you a link sometime!
I have just finished knitting my own Dark Mark Illusion scarf. Thanks so much for the pattern. It's my first illusion project and turned out perfect. :D
I love your scarf!
I am sure I will make it - and soon!
Thanks a lot for a great pattern.
(Obviously I am a Harry Potter fan too :-) )
Roberta
I just want to be sure I'm supposed to Knit row 4, not Perl. I've never tried illusion knitting before, but this looks so fun!
That is beyond amazing! I'm a new knitter, as in I've done straight knit on one 3ft scarf and only with one color. That being said, I'm going to give this a go and see how bad I can screw it up, or how much I can prove myself wrong. Either way I lose and end up with some semblance of a knotted ysrn scarf.
I suffer from severe purltardation so this is going to be quite the challenge. Not to mention double colors, I'm not even sure if I get the concept of using alternating colors without tying off the ends together...Hrm. Maybe I should understand that part first eh?
As a mother of 6 boys and 3 grandson this scarf is totally awesome. I dont know which son to make it for first
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing the pattern! My brother is going to LOVE this!
hey, I got the pattern. didn't see it before posting my first comment.
Thank you sooooo much for sharing this! It's awesome! I'm going to make one most definitely. :)
Now i have to learn to knit lol. I always wanted to learn, I just found my excuse. Great scarf, the pattern is awesome.
Thank you Lindsay, this pattern is just great!I just finished first one, it's a present to my nephew.Greetings from other side of the world!

This pattern is amazing and I'd dearly love to give it a try. However, you say to use wool yarn as acrylic won't block well. Alas, I'm allergic to wool. Are there any other alternatives you might suggest?
I am about at the half way mark, and I am thoroughly enjoying this pattern. I hope the recipient thinks it is as cool as I do!!! Thanks for sharing it!!
